Yes, the above System should be fine for Linux, but you have not mentioned
the amount of RAM you have. And also, your System will respond much faster
with Linux as compared to Windows.

What you will have to check on is the Swap Space, that depends on your RAM &
you Disk Capacity.

Subject: Help about filesystem
Date: Mon, 4 Dec 2000 10:21:34 +0100

Hi,
Here is my problem : i have some NTFS partitions mounted on my system
(mickey,donald,pluto)
as it is written in fstab:

-> cat /etc/fstab

/dev/hda5 / ext2 defaults 1 1
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0
/mnt/cdrom /mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/cdrom 0 0
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hda6 swap swap defaults 0 0
# Win 2k
/dev/hda1 /mnt/mickey ntfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hde2 /mnt/donald ntfs defaults 0 0
/dev/hde5 /mnt/pluto ntfs defaults 0 0

I have read access on this partition for the root but no access for other
user:

-> ls -l /mnt

total 6
dr-xr-xr-x    1 root     root         2048 déc  2 14:21 cdrom/
drwxr-xr-x    2 root     root         4096 nov 30 21:48 disk/
dr-x------    1 root     root        16384 nov 29 18:32 donald/
drwxrwxrwx    1 root     root            0 déc  3 18:11 floppy/
dr-x------    1 root     root         8192 déc  3 18:04 mickey/
dr-x------    1 root     root        12288 déc  3 17:49 pluto/

I want to access to this partition as a simple user
I tried to change the owner of the partition as root:

-> chown cyril /mnt/mickey

But the system refuse and reply:

chown: /mnt/donald: File system is in read access only

It the same when i try to change the right:

-> chmod 555 /mnt/mickey

chown: /mnt/donald: File system is in read access only

So what is the problem, how can i do to change to have access to those
partitions as a simple user

A) ntfs write support is very experimental. Unless you don't value your
data, I wouldn't use it.

B) Don't try to chmod. Use the umask option when you mount the FS.

They are running TCP/IP ... actually the PowerBook is my work machine
which I use in a mixed Sun, NT, Mac environment at work.

It could possibly mean some protocol issue or your Routing table hasn't been
configured.

Assuming the above two lines were actually all on one line, this
works.  However...

Why use the "-s 56" option with ping? That is the default behavior.

And why poke the results through awk at all, much less twice???
All you really need to know is if ping succeeded even one time,
and if it did there will be a line returned that looks something
like this:

  64 bytes from 192.168.0.30: icmp_seq=0 ttl=255 time=0.1 ms

So..., grep for something unique in that line...

  ping -c 3 mywebserver | grep "64 bytes"

The status of that command is then returned in $?, which you
can either save or you can use directly with a script something
like this

  #!/bin/bash
  remote=mywebserver
  if ping -c 1 $remote | grep -q "64 bytes";then
    echo $remote online
  else
    echo $remote offline
  fi

>   if [ $PING -eq 0 ]; then
> echo "Your server is off network" | mail -s "PING FAILED"

The two lines above must be one line also.

Sure it is possible. But ask yourself do you really want to learn
a new environment ? If you're familiar with Unix then it is a piece
of cake, if not there is a steep learning curve.

Java or MS Windows binaries ? If you're primarily interested in running
Windows binaries stick to MS Windows. Can't comment on Java as I
personally have no interest in it. The rest is no problem.

Head on over to http://www.linuxhq.com and look in the documentation
section. Read the Linux FAQ (out of date?) then reconsider.

Hi,

Is there a way to get rid of the logs from dhcpd daemon in the
/var/log/messages file. This file is filled with a lot of pair of messages
like
DHCPREQUEST for ip_adress from network_card_address
DHCPACK on ip_address to network_card_address
that make hard to find messahes from other daemons.

I have understood that the logs are generated by syslogd but is there a way
to redirect these logs to another file, secifically for the daemon dhcpd ?

The problem isn't the web server but the fact that my Linux machine
doesn't seem to 'get out' onto the local network ... it's the same
problem for any application ping, telnet, etc.

Yes. But--this is all specious. All RPM-package systems are at least
somewhat similar to Red Hat, although the situation is improving. Red
Hat's default configurations from version to version, correlate
increasingly less with reality, wrt/how people actually use the
systems.

It's unfortunate that marketing shoves aside the content of the
systems, and the public asks for "Red Hat" when what they really want
is Linux.

I'd still recommend Debian. Bugs are to be expected in version .0
systems, regardless.

Apologies for the rants and the rhetoric. However, I can back it up.
Not one of my systems, a few hours after installation, bears even the
slightest resemblance to a boxed distribution.
