Subject: HP Colorado Streamer / FC 20 Controller
Date: Fri, 06 Apr 2001 21:12:58 +0200

Hello folks,

I have an old P1 computer equipped with a HP Colorado 1000 Travan floppy
streamer.
That streamer is connected to a FC 20 controller (for compression
purposes).
The distribution I use is SuSE 7.1 (kernel 2.4)

Background:
with kernel 2.0.xx, I used ftape as a module - the streamer worked
perfectly.
Then, with kernel 2.2.13 (SuSE 6.3), I suddenly had to compile streamer
support into the kernel
and use zftape/compressor support. And BTW: the module-version didn't
work any more.

Now I installed SuSE 7.1 with kernel 2.4 which has a pre-compiled module
support for the
ftape and zftape interfaces. But none of them actually do work. I always
get the response

    /dev/ftape: No such device

The same applies for zftape.

My aim is getting that streamer working (of course) with
zftape/compressor support.
An if possible - somehow - by using a module which is loaded on demand.

The streamer/controller settings are the defaults:

    FC 20: I/O 210-217
            DMA 3
            IRQ 9

    Colorado: I/O 180-187

This configuration works perfectly under windows - and it did with
previous kernel versions
(as described).

Please help me with 2.4.
Best regards,

Thomas

Next time do this

cp old_log new_log
cat /dev/null > old_log
gzip new_log

there ya go...you can even make a handy script out of it.

that way you don't have to restart anything.

    -J

that way you won't have to

Hey, you are right. I'm running RH 6.0, which has glibc 2.1.1-6. But,
upgrading to glibc 2.2.2 seems like a major endeavor (gcc-2.95, make-3.79,
binutils-2.10.1, etc are required). I am willing to do this, but I want to
make sure that doing all of these updgrades is not going to break my system.
I've heard (maybe not true) that RH 6.2 and above have issues with floating
point calculations. Sounds to me like if I make all the required upgrades to
glibc 2.2, then my system will behave as if it had RH 7.0 on it. Is my
concern legitimate? If so, do I have other options?
Thanks,
Ken

It seems you have not generated a secret key yet,
or it just cannot find it. In the first (likely) case,
type in "gpg --help" and it will tell you what to
do.

"Using insecure memory" means (afaik) that the memory you
use may be swapped out, thereby leaving traces of your
activity on your harddisk. Make gpg SUID root or run it
as root and this should go away. Only needed if you're
really paranoid, IMHO.

You should allow everything on localhost (127.0.0.1), or your system will
not work 100%.

I'm currently working on a serial communications wrapper
that will be used for both Linux and MacOS X.
I'm new to serial io using termios and have a question
that I could not find answered in the man page...

On legacy MacOS as well as Windows there are API's to
install or resize an input buffer for a serial port.
This system buffer catches the input asyncrhonously,
even if your read/write mode is not explicitly asynchronous.

In addition, both OS's allow you to query the system for
the "available" bytes (bytes that have accumulated in
the input buffer) before you do a read.

I could not find any comparable method in the termios/read()
model. Is this always done from scratch in termios programming
(allocate your own intermediate buffer and track byte-counts
for reads yourself), or is there some associated library or
function that I'm overlooking?

Thanks in advance,
Christopher

Any advice would be helpful. Have checked archives and newsgroups to no

Well, I broke some one else's Linux 6 system. Rebuilding from scratch
is almost out of the question.

============
Here's the heart of the matter: I overwrote the file libc.so.6. I
overwrote it with a different libc.so.6 from another system. I
believe that is the only thing that i screwed up.
Although i could have done some other things -- you know how things get
fuzzy after you've been working on them for a while.
============
===  More info below  ===

I have created a boot disk to boot with and can now mount the hda2 and
get access to the /lib directory.

Through some investigating, that libc.so.6 appears to be a symlink to
some other file -- not 100% sure

I have created the symlink /lib/libc.so.6 pointing to
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 --no luck.

I am starting to question what lib.so.6 is really pointing to or am I
going along the right lines.

I believe that it has something to do with the colors being extended characters

If you need to use the nic and feel up to a little hacking, try removing
the driver it hangs on. Instructions on how to unpack, modify, and repack

i had to fix this problem for a colleague a while ago:

boot with a rescue disk, mount the root partition and edit /etc/shadow:
pick a password you remember and paste it into the password position of
the entry for root. then reboot and login with the known password.

Well this is quite weird. As a user, I get colours with both 'ls' and
