...i am having some problems getting my rh5.1 box talking on a LAN (using
tcp/ip only). the nic is a 3com 509b-tpo isa card. This card works with
no probs, b/c i had this same exact card in a 486/33mhz box dual booting
win 95 and rh 5.0 with the 2.0.34 kernel. The 486 box worked great...on
probs configuring...setting up etc etc....now, i just got a pII350, ide
hardware...nothing out of the ordinary. This box is running win98 8-(,
and i put on rh5.1 and i re-compiled the 2.0.36 kernel (yes with tcp
networking and all necessary drivers i needed to use networking). The
linux box just won't broadcast packets from the device (eth0)..i.e doesn't
talk to any routers or any machine on the same subnet. Other machines on
the same subnet also can't ping the linux box.

i configured the loopback device, eth0 with the correct submask...added a
static route to a router on the same subnet....bascically i set it up word
for word using the NET-3 HOW-TO (i also changed subnet masks...routers
ip's just for kicks). now when i ping stuff on the same sub-net...it just
sits there and times out...when i go to another machine on the same
subnet...it won't ping the linux box. Yes, there's nothing wrong with the
subnet/gateways...when i snoop packets coming from the linux box, it
doesn't broadcast any tcp/ip packets...it does nothing. on the hub, when
it boots to linux, the light lights up, so obviusly there is a connection.
by the way the card works fine in win98....with the same setup.

i also turned off Pnp using the 3c5xcfg util in dos....and it does't do
anything...

so my quesitons are why did this same card work in RH5.0 kernel 2.0.34 w/o
any specail configuring? why does it not work now? how can i get it to
work? before i recompiled the kernel, i still have the 2.0.34 kernel that
i can boot to...it's just specified in lilo...and i still have the same
problems.

also, any of you ever ran squid1.x on a dell poweredge with
scsieverything/raid controllers? I'd like to setup a child squid server
for some major web caching....there is already a parent squid server
gettting 11,000hits/hr..with no problems. how's the I/O?
