Laptop PC Card Modems

I just got a HP Omnibook Laptop and want to install Linux on it.  I need
to buy a modem for it and want to make it as painless(read cheap) as
possible.  I was wondering are there issues with PC Card Modems like
there are with Win Modems in Linux.  Are there Win Modems in PC Cards or
are they all real modems?
