moreover, bear in mind that, just because a username/password pair works
for ftp, it doesn't automatically get you interactive (ie, telnet etc.)
access. if they're running something like wu-ftpd, it could very well be
configured to permit you only controlled ftp access, and nothing
interactive.
i'm with will; if you can't check a console login, i'd check with the
admins of the box in question.
