Via POP3 and IMAP4 protocols all fine, presuming your
clients are configured to use those Message-Store access
protocols.

It all depends how you understand those terms.
Linux boxes can run in Firewall mode themselves, or they
can do application based security (e.g. POP3 is allowed
only from selected networks via e.g. tcp-wrapper.)
