Forget doing things the microslop way. This is the real world, so do
it how it should be done.

There isn't an equivalent product for linux that does the same thing
as the nt exchange server. It's done differently. Exchange works in
weird, non-standard propriatory ways.

If you must have an exchange server, do everything else with linux,
then have one dedicated nt box doing just the exchange stuff - and not
much else. Especially not the relaying nor acting as the MX host...
get mail for people who use exchange forwarded onto that box.

samba will do a *better* job at nt networking than nt itself. It can
do browsing, sharing, access control, network password authentication,
the works. See the "swat" utility (that comes with samba) for
configuring it, it's very good.

Almost trivial, and done right it is very secure indeed.

But you really do need to know what you are doing. Read the relevant
HOWTOs... start with the NET-3 and NET-4, and go to the others for
more information as these point you to them. Then get your hands on a
network sniffer/snooper/analyser (of which there are quite a few).

Linux can do full-fledged firewalling, proxying, local access control
(tcp_wrappers), the works. And out of the box - nothing more is
needed.
