This is not that puzzling. The file favicon.ico is requested by IE5 when
someone is trying to add your page to the bookmarks. Should you create a
Windows standard 16x16 icon and place it in the very root of your [web]
server, whenever someone adds you to the bookmarks your icon will show up
next to the link. I personally think it's a good feature and wish NN had it.
