I think not. But the randomness had almost driven me crazy too.

Default gw should be the IP of NIC that your internal network is connected
to.
The router then lookups its routing table and if he discovers that the
packet should be sent out, he will use the default route through eth1 and
will resend it to your network gateway at *.129

I wouldn't suggest to use development kernels in production servers.
I am using 2.2.15pre10 here now for routing, firewalling, proxy_arping,
MASQing and bridging ( not the 2.2.15 one, but the newer bridge
code from openrock.net ) and I am really happy with it so far... :-)
