as Windows Applications Developer I know much of Windows Insides.

Windows has no architecture, as Unices have.
Windows came from DOS and there are too many compatibility hacks inside.
Design of Windows is lead not by analysts / architects / programmers but by
marketing peoples. (Remeber: goal of M$ not make a good OS - but to make a
money)

That's all make Windows too weak to compete with Unices.

Unices has well defined and standardized architecture proved by over than 25
years of employment. Unices quite simple from inside.
And most errors of Unices already found and fixed ;-)))

Particulary Linux has most of advantages of Unices. Right now Unices survived
mainly at high-end - niche of Linux is low/mid-end. Now kernel developement is
moving to high-end.

I like Linux for freedom of choice. that's main for me. and Unices can give
you this freedom.

PS Oh! take a look at BeOS - it build around BSD kernel - and it is quite nice.
very light and easy-to-use OS. plays mp3s right out of box!
