I had originally used the 1000 UID that slackware assigned it. I changed
it because, well I was trying just about anything and that was the number
that Redhat 5.1 had given that same user when I created him. As it turned
out the permissions for /etc/passwd was set at 700. So when I logged on
as someone other than root, the OS was unable to read the file and tell me
who I was. I'm not positive here, but don't really think that the value
of the UID really makes a diff, as long as it isnt one that is already
reserved for something else. From now on, though, I will let adduser make
that decision.
