Being new to Linux I can't tell you much about what boards will work well
with Linux, but you might want to consider getting something that will
support the later versions of the AMD processors, in case you decide to
upgrade later. Some of the good boards out there are the Shuttle 591P it
supports up to the K6-2 300mhz w/3D NOW. M-Tech also makes a good board for
this purpose, unfortunately these boards are about $90 and do not include
video. But they do have an AGP slot.
