YOU CAN NOT.

Suppose you configure Minicom to set the modem (you need the modem's
book to do a good work) and dial the number.
When you hear the other computer whisteling you can leave Minicom
without reseting the modem pressing Alt+Q.
In this moment you have to start ppp and you have no time to write the
command line because servers are set to dissconect after a delay (let
say 30 sec) if there is no ppp at the other end of the line. So you got
to write a script no matter how simple it is. And you need another
script to end the connection. Trust me. I tried.I was never faster than
my server.
Without a script you can only ping to check your connection as the
PPP-MODEM-TELEPHONE HOWTO says. Print the HOWTO on paper, and with the
paper in your hand, do, step by step, everything it says.
Or use Kppp from KDE. It is writeing the script in interactive way.

On the RPM problem, first of all you have to say what linux you use.
I presume it is RedHat if you want RPM. If it is Redhat I think you
cofigured your Xwindow at installation time. Go in X and there is in the
menu a "Control Pannel". In the Control Pannel there is a grafic tool
for RPM, the icon is a box with a ribbon like those you get the kakes
in.You can use the tool to see what packages you installed or what is
available to install on a CD (for exemple).
