I use Outlook Express for my emailing and you can create rules that search
the To: or CC: for part of a string...as linux-newbie.  Works great for me
except in the cases that Ray mentioned.

P.S. - The reason that I use Outlook Express is cause I tinker with settings
alot and mess up my Linux installation frequently.....I am learning though,
I think.
