Things to try;
Remove the gateway setting from both computers.
(no offence, but you do have the right terminators on the cable don't
you?)
install samba on the linux box for win95 connectivity.
I don't know if this is required, but I (a newbie) have managed to
ping a win98 box from my linux box, having set it up in XWindows
with netcfg, but I have to use netcfg to enable the card and tcp/ip
on boot-up every time.

Hope this gives you some new ideas,
Simon.
