If that's a 10Base-T (RJ45) intranet you're trying to build, a cable
that worked on an internet-connected computer at work likely connected
it to a hub, and will not work between 2 normal machines, as they will
be sending to each others' send lines. The ethernet howto has
instructions on making a null-hub cable such as you need. I don't
think I'd want to try it.
You should be able to buy one for not too much.
