Actually, despite the intense holy wars going on out there, KDE and GNOME do
the basic same thing. The only major difference is that KDE has it's own
window manager and GNOME doesn't.

They both put icons and folders on the desktop (which is why KDE is called
windows-like and GNOME isn't). They both have applications designed to work
with the desktop and the other apps.
