It sounds like you have your virtual desktop turn on higher than the
resolution of your monitor.  If you edit your X config file, you should be 
able to see it as one whole image.
CD-ROM is easy to get just type:
$ mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
*This assumes a IDE cdrom.  You also don't need to put it in /mnt; you can 
mount it wherever you like.  To change disks, you need to unmount the cdrom 
like this:
$ umount /mnt

To get more packages, just mount your Cdrom, startx, and go to the control 
panel - it should start with X.  In the control panel, go to Package Manger 
and then install away.

This is how it works for me on RH 5, yours may be different from me.
