I don't know what is causing your problem, but I have an alternate
suggestion for shutting down X that will keep from toasting your
filesystem. Hit ctrl-alt-backspace to kill X-Windows. If that doesn't
work, try switching to a different console (alt-f2 or ctrl-alt-f2 to
switch to console 2, f3 for 3, etc. The X session will be on console
7.) and killing the X process manually.
