Often X _seems_ to freeze, but in fact it hs just stuk for a while creating
the impression it has frozen, there is then in most cases no need to hit the
reset button, there are other ways ti kill the X server.

I would in such a situation hit ctrl-alt-backspace simultainiously, if that
fails i would then try hiting ctrl-alt-F1 {F2} {F3} etc, that should return
you to a console where one could then inspect the log which was produced
when the startx command was issued, one can then also kill the X processes,
possably the last few lines of the screen log will show the problem.
Another place to look is the system log, normaly /var/log messages or syslog.

A small note on your sig, it is noramly accepable to have a signature of a
few lines, the above could be considered a little on the large size.
