This is true only for twisted pair cable, but I am using thin ethernet cable.

Thin ethernet requires BNC T-connectors at each card and a terminator at 
both ends of the segment. No HUB is needed.

(my ethernet cards are quite old ISA cards)
(and the system is RedHat Linux 6.0 with networking installed)

So the question still remains...
