Eterm arrow keys

Under Eterm if I use the arrow keys, say up, to bring up the last command
in bash or if I use the arrow keys to move around a text editor, Eterm
"flashes" for a second and I have to wait for it till I do something.  The
entire Eterm flashes, the background image is still displayed, but the
text, menu and scroll bar go away for a second... Is there anything I can
do to fix this?
