It's probably the "video beep" setting. Linux has the option of having the
screen flash instead of getting an obnoxious audio beep when you do
something "wrong" like try to move your cursor beyond the last letter of a
line in vi, for example.
As to how to fix it? I'm not quite sure where the setting is, but I can find
out. Or now that I've (hopefully) identified the problem, perhaps someone
else who is less clueless can suggest a fix?
