I don't know Caldera specifically (I don't think Caldera users are very
common on this list generally), so these thoughts are Linux generic.

Check the output of "free" to see if

-- Linux sees all 64 lM of RAM
        -- Linux is using swap

Especially do this after Netscape starts causing your hard disk to "thrash"
-- my first guess is that this is heavy use of the swap partition.

Use "top" and "ps ax" to see what processes are using the most CPU time and
RAM. You may be running things you don't realize are taking up system
resources. (I don't know offhand what "is the standard 'Home PC'" install in
Caldera sets up.

Do your logs report any problems from pppd during negotiation? (I asusme you
are talking about ppp connections.)

As to your more general dissatisfaction with connection speed ... what
"things" don't "happen as fast on the Linux side"? That's sufficiently
general that I can't really think of anything to suggest except for the
above, equally general ideas.

Oh, one thing ... how sure are you that you are connecting at the "same
baud-rates"? The default output speed report of most modems reports the
speed of the serial port, NOT of the telephone-line connection, and they
don't need to match on modern modems. Make sure you are checking the right
thing.
