Kudos to Ray and Mike! It turns out that swap wasn't active. I never even
considered this since I specified the partition in the install. Thanks for
kindly pointing out the first thing I should have checked. :)
As to the slowness of my connection, I check the CARRIER baudrate at
connection, so I am sure that my connect speeds are the same, but I have begun
to suspect that my modem is the problem. Further testing has revealed lag
times with the same modem in Windows after I've been connected for several
minutes.
Anyway, thanks for all the help.
