Well when i started using Linux the X interface left a lot to be desired,
there was really only fvwm, so i never used X at all.
The problem in this day and age is that newcommers to Linux have only used
Windows and therefor want a GUI, without being dissrespectfull i belive
new commers should NOT use X untill they see how linux works.
That i know will never happen but it would give them more of an insight
into possable problems like you have experianced.
