I use fetchmail.  It has an option so you can run it periodically, ie;
'fetchmail -d 3600' will run it once an hour and grab email.
It is easy to setup using .fetchmailrc, sample below;

poll mail.dt1.sdca.home.com proto pop3
user xxxxxxxx, with password zzzzzz
--------------------------------
Of course may user name is not xxxx nor password zzzz and you will have to
edit in your isp mail client after the word 'poll' and before 'proto pop3'
This is assuming your isp supports pop3.
