The Minium requires for Linux (IIRC) is a 386SX and 4 megs of RAM and
atleast one 1.44 floppy drive. If you want to run a Unix-like OS on this
hardware, the only thing I could think of would be Minix
(http://www.cs.vu.nl/~ast/minix.html). From the web site the minium
requirements look like an 8086 with 640K RAM.
If I could requirement maybe getting an used 486 or pentium class computer,
install it with Linux then use these 8086 and 286 for "smart" terminals
hanging off the Linux machine, just have the students telnet into the server
and do there learning, work and playing from there? You should be able to
get a used 486/pentium class machine for under $50 from ebay.com and you
will still have the benifit of everyone having a "computer" in front of
them.
