Sure, I know you meant the software ;-)

That's a logical assumption. Apache is indeed installed and since my last post I have managed to get PHP working (wasn't hard really, I was just using the wrong file extension...duh!).

Yep, I could certainly kill the server by writing a simple script that calls kill -9 <path to pid>/httpd.pid for example but it's starting it up again that would be the problem. I'm still struggling with the file system and finding things, I assume that there would be an httpd binary somewhere that can be invoked (with [optional] cla's).
I discovered that the second disk in the distribution contains the source for [all] the open source apps, perhaps I should try to build Apache by hand ?

Well, I loaded RedHat Linux 6.2 CD 1 after setting the bios to boot from CD-ROM, selected 'everything' on the relevant screen, clicked 'install' (or whatever) and went and had a few beers while installation proceeded.
When the system rebooted I typed startx, played around with the GUI's for a while then got bored and exited to the command line.
This is where I am at the moment, I'm trying to mirror the setup at my ISP so that I can develop locally then upload working code over the phone line.
I'm currently trying to get my head round the httpd.conf file which is why I would like a convenient way to start and stop Apache.

As I am discovering.
Cheers
