Well, my 2 cents worth:
I started as a lot of newbies do, grab a book at the book store with a CD
included. At that time, there were a few distros out there, but not many.
The one that came in the books usually was Slackware 3.x. I cut my teeth on
it, and found that I understand it much more. Slackware in it's 3.x versions
(have not tried 4.x or 7.x yet), was very much a build your own system. Not
much on install, but for a wirehead like me, I learned a lot about the OS.
That was 3-4 years ago. It was like building your own hot-rod from a kit.
Now, I usually endorse RedHat 6.1 or higher, or Mandrake (Red Hat with a
smoother installer, although RH's installer is good too). Mandrake will
probably be the easiest to install and use. Red Hat a good 2nd.
