Summary
-------
I am trying to set up Linux software raid (RAID-0, two UDMA-66 drives) on a
Promise Ultra66 card in a PentiumPro-200 class machine (2.5yr old Gateway),
using any late 2.2.x kernel. I'm running on a system that was originally
clean-installed from RedHat 6.1 (and thus began life with the 2.2.12-20
kernel from RedHat).

Details
-------
In order to support the Promise Ultra66, it seems I need the Unified IDE
patches (http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/hedrick/).

Since I want to stay on 2.2.x, it looks like I need 2.2.17 and the
associated Unified IDE patch for it. I have successfully
obtained/patched/installed the stock 2.2.17 kernel
(ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.2/linux-2.2.17.tar.gz). This
combo works great with the Ultra66 card. (I chose 2.2.17 because it is
stated as the "latest" 2.2, and I haven't been able to get any of the other
2.2.x Unified IDE patches to work with their associated kernel
versions. For example, the 2.2.12 ide patch fails.)

Since the stock 2.2.17 does _not_ include the New RAID patches, I need to
apply those patches. I've looked in
ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/raid/alpha/, but the latest 2.2
patch is for 2.2.11 (I tried; it fails to patch 2.2.17).

Then there are the bleeding edge patches
(http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches/), but that file labelled
'/raidtools-dangerous-0.90-20000116.tar.gz' is a tad scary. Further, the
patch located there for 2.2.17
(http://people.redhat.com/mingo/raid-patches/raid-2.2.17-A0) _also_ fails
to patch my stock 2.2.17. Perhaps I'll try reversing the patch order
(NewRAID first, then UnifiedIDE)?

It also looks like I could use a stock 2.2.16 kernel, and matching patches
for Unified IDE and New RAID. (This may also be true for 2.2.15.)

I look forward to screaming performance from striping across these two 60G
UDMA-66 drives. Please forward any insights you may have to me.
