Once it is set up and working, linux raid it is very stable. In a "production
environment" ,  the type of re-configuration you are doing is not very common
and I agree that the raid tools don't handle every possible situation.  

As for your problem, I think you could still use my suggestion.  Boot to DOS,
delete all the raid partitions (sca3 and scb3) with DOS fdisk, create a new
primary in place of the old partitions, re-boot to dos, format the new DOS
primary partitions and run fdisk /mbr.  None of this destroys the data you are
trying to protect. 

Now, re-boot with a linux boot floppy, re-create the MBR with lilo and use
linux fdisk to delete the DOS partitions, create the new partitions for raid
and proceed from there.  That has worked for me, but I would be happy to hear
of a better solution . . .
