I've been using this MO drive with a 2k-patch (not Y2K ;-) since
about 2.0.32 and joined 2.1 at 2.1.90. I had no problems so far.

What filesystem type is there? Are you sure it's partitoned
(/dev/sda1)? When formated as 'superfloppy' (as Windows does)
you should use the whole device /dev/sda.
If it is partitioned - how?

So you didn't check that it is clean?
Here's what my dirty drive produced here:

kernel: (scsi0:0:6:0) Data overrun detected in Data-In phase, tag 11;
kernel: Have seen Data Phase. Length=1024, NumSGs=1.
kernel:      sg[0] - Addr 0x7b4400 : Length 1024

Maybe OS/2 is less picky.

This sure is done.
