I booted with no disk in the drive (and I now have the 2.2.0 kernel
released earlier this week).

I inserted three different 640 Mb disks and read the partition table.
No apparent problem.

I then inserted a 230 Mb (ext2) disk. Here's what fdisk says:
[summer@possum summer]$ /sbin/fdisk /dev/sda
You will not be able to write the partition table.
