The point in this is that my Linux box has no problems using both
media types, so it would be useful to identify the parts of your 
setup that differ from mine.

You also didn't previously report wether reading the partition table
succeded or not. 

But try inserting a 230 MB medium now. If mounting that fails it
would support your assupmtion about media type change.
