I was simulating at 8x with 10 sec buffer in memory (option --buffers 80
in cdrdao). The process lasted about 11 sec.

Sorry if I did not reply faster. Had many things to do...
Now, the good ones. It happened on Saturday, I did about three simulations
and all three went wrong as I've specified. I did not look into the procfs
as you've stated, sorry. Today I'm doing some more simulations with cdrdao
on-the-fly but nothing strange does seem to appear. I've not done anything
regarding the scsi bus.
Would it have been some overheating? At this time none of the hdds has its
own fan... They aren't very close to reader/burner.
I have no clues!
