This can theoretically work (depending on the components involved) but there
are no real guarantees in my experience.

The real sticking issue is usually termination.  I've found that Ultra
devices are much more finicky about termination than the old 5/10/20MHz
stuff was.  

The lines coming from the drive and going to the controller are probably
terminated just fine, but it is quite possible that the termination used on
the wide side is not what it should be in your case.

Note that all terminators are definitely NOT created equal, so just having
one is no guarantee either.  I've found that when shopping for terminators,
the expensive ones really do work a lot better.
