We used to build Unix servers with 8 of those drives, and the failure rate
was 50% in the first 6 months, so it's possible they are all bad (I have one
from two years ago still running fine though.) You might wanna see if you
can borrow a UW controller to see if they work with that. They may be
drives that simply won't work without a UW controller as well.
But I wouldn't trust them much, even in a RAID 5 array. When we shipped an
8 drive server, the average was 2 dead drives on the other end, every time,
even distributed among the old drives and the newer replacement drives HP
was shipping us by the carton. We traded almost all of them in a year later
on Seagate Barracudas due to the high failure rate.
