Do you mean "router" or "hub"? Two _entirely_ different things.
Assuming you mean hub (cough), there are no 3-way crossover cables
because you must connect the output wire of machine A to the input
wire of machine B, and how then will you get the output wire of
A connected to the input wires of both B and C? You could paintakingly
splice the wire correctly, taking care to do it so well that it does
not cause unacceptable interence, or you can just use a HUB!

I just bought a Compaq 5000 series Pentium III/700 system, largely
because I was quite impressed by its display performance. Here's what
the Compaq web site has to say about the system:

http://athome.compaq.com/family_details.asp?ProductLineId=441&FamilyId=655#

I took it home, and discovered SuperProbe could not identify the video
card. It claims to be an AGP card, but is apparently motherboard based
and uses the RAM on the motherboard. You can get from 1-11mb video RAM.

I got the system working by putting in a PCI card (the ATI@work), but
frankly it's just not up to snuff in terms of speed. I'd like to see
this system work to its full potential (which I think is quite high).

Anyone know what video card this system uses, or if there's a driver for
it anywhere? If there is no driver, anyone have recommendations for
upgrading the system to a faster card? I use big monitors (a NEC XP21),
so the more memory and processing speed the better.

Many thanks for any thoughts.

D

When you extracted the kernel source files they should have went to a
subdirectory of /tmp (probably linux). You have to run "make config" or
"make menuconfig" after changing to that subdirectory with "cd /tmp/linux".
Hope this helps, John

It could be that the install modified your kernel. When the kernel is
modified, lilo needs to be re-run before rebooting. I believe you can boot
up with the install cdrom and at the boot prompt type "linux root=/dev/hda0"
(or whatever partition your linux is in). Then run just type "lilo" to
re-run lilo and your problem should be corrected. There is a post in this
newsgroup I think that talks about updating the kernel then forgetting to
run lilo with the same procedure listed. Hope this helps, John

Thanks, but I dumped the Storm Linux, so I don't need it
any more.
I have some new questions for the Mandrake I installed
so I'll be posting a new message about it.

Hmmm! Maybe that is part of my problem. I removed IE off of the system
which has windoz 95 on it. ;-)

the modem.

I have Linux setup so that it will stay connected 23.59 Hrs at which
time my ISP cuts me off then it automatically redials in 30 seconds and
is up for another 23.59 Hrs. I run 2 seti's at a time on one of my linux
systems and 1 on another linux box plus the 1 on the CRASH box. The
linux systems send and recieve WU's without any problems though I only
use the text version. I have even shutdown my firewall long enough to
see if maybe it was blocking it but still no luck.

Thanks for the reply.
I'm still stumped??

Load /etc/XF86Config into an editor

for the colour depth you run your desktop at (8/16/24/32bit) change the
largest value, eg "1280x1024" to the one you want, eg "800x600".

It's best to keep the smaller ones in there so you can switch between
different resolutions with CTRL-ALT-(+/-).

Thank you Edwin. Do you have any idea how I can do this?
I had used already a bootdisk but it looks like the installation begins from
scratch (e.g partitions, formating, ... ect).

On the other hand I know what I actually did is that I installed a new kernel
that lilo cannot find, read or/and understand. I am pretty sure that this is
the problem, but I do not know exactly what I have to do to repair it safely.

Even easier as you can do a partitionless installation. You can even
install it from within Windows98 by letting your CD-ROM autostart the CD to
install Linux4Win. I found mandrakes partitionless install version of Linux
to be faster than RH6.2.

Not sure, but does it really matter? They are all a version of Linux and
some version of features of other versions mixed and mached to make their
own flavour. The Debian core is supposed to be more stable though.

Actually, Win2K is not entirely restricted to your F: drive. Part of it
-- a *VERY* critical part -- is on C:. AFAIK, there's no way to work
around this.

> I would like to delete Win98 and install Linux there.

You can't convert the C: partition entirely to Linux. You can, however,
delete all of Win98, shrink the partition, and install Linux in the
space you've freed up. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly which files
you need to preserve to keep Win2K booting. Alternatively, you can wipe
both the C: and F: partitions and install Win2K on a new C: partition,
then install Linux in what is now F:.

Nope. NT's OS Loader resides in the boot sector of the boot partition
(C:).

Linux will not overwrite the C: boot sector, unless you severely
misconfigure it. Depending upon how you set it up and which distribution
you use, it may or may not write LILO to the MBR.

Subject: Changed from Storm to Mandrake-have some new questions
Date: Mon, 3 Jul 2000 17:16:44 -0500

I couldn't get Storm to recognize my modem on COM2, so I
installed Mandrake 7.0 (I got both CD's with an issue of
Maximum Linux).
I'm glad I switched, as I like Mandrake much better. It also
recognizes the modem on COM2 so I can connect to the Internet.
But there's just one problem. It will dial out and connect to my
ISP and I can run Netscape, but I can't go to any web sites. Anything
I type in returns an error saying the site can't be found. None of the
links in Netscape or the Mandrake web site will work either.
I also have a few other questions (some may be rather stupid, but
I'm new to Linux).
It installed LILO as the boot manager, but I really hate that text thing.
I tried to use Partition Magic's BootMagic to replace it, but it won't
recognize the Linux partition. It says it's there but it's an unknown OS.
I've tried everything I could think of to get it to recognize it, but it
won't. Is there a better version of LILO I can install, or another boot
manager entirely?
This Mandrake has a tendency to keep turning Num Lock on and off
when I boot or shut down. I don't want Num Lock turned on. Is there a
way to disable this?
I have a PS/2 mouse with a scroll wheel, but the driver it installed for
the mouse doesn't work with the wheel. Is there a driver I can get to
replace it so I can use the wheel?
When Mandrake was installing, it said it was installing WINE to use
with Windows programs, but I can't see anything in the programs list
called WINE. Is this a program you have to run, or does it run
automatically if you try to use a Windows program?
And lastly, I'm used to using ACDSee in Windows. There were a couple
of image viewing programs installed, but they don't seem to be anywhere
near as good as ACDSee for viewing and managing image files. What is a
good program?
Thanks for your help, sorry to have so many questions.

Even if you are not in X you can access your dos partition. You just

Another reason for this to happen is when you don't use a mailbox of
type mbox: if, for example, /var/spool/mail/username is a symbolic link
to the user's Maildir mailbox on it's home directory, the file
"/var/spool/mail/username" will be more than 0 bytes long, so some
programs believe there is something on the mailbox when there is
nothing.

Hello,
I have set up my Linux machine to print to a Win2k server using TCP/IP
printing. The Win2k server is using LPD to accept print jobs. I can
print to the printer ONCE. This leaves a zero byte file in the print
queue that seems to prevent following jobs from printing. I get this
output:

[root@io lpd]# lpq

io: Warning: no daemon present

If I LPRM this job each time I can continue to print. The Owner, Job

from. Does anyone know why this file is left in the queue?
