Subject: gtk ./configure problem
Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 23:10:53 GMT

I tried to set up gtk libraries on a SuSE 6.3 in order to use gphoto

During ./configure script i got a error ...

checking for GLIB - version >= 1.2.7... yes
checking for X... no
configure: error:
*** X libraries or include files not found. Check 'config.log' for
*** more details.

In config.log I found:

configure:4675: gcc -o conftest -g -O2 -Wall conftest.c -lXt 1>&5
configure: In function `main':
configure:4671: warning: implicit declaration of function `XtMalloc'
/usr/i486-linux/bin/ld: cannot open -lXt: No such file or directory
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
configure: failed program was:
#line 4668 "configure"
#include "confdefs.h"

Nedless to say the file condefs.h is existant ... where I can start
checking?

Thanks in advance

First, it was quite silly to cross post to so many groups. If you're gonna'
cross post, please limit it to two or three groups.

Second, I know how but I'm not going to tell you 'cause it's a bad idea.
Instead, login as a user and use the command "su - root".

If it's an odd numbered kernel that says it all.

Everytime I start the X server, the monitor goes blank and I get a
"out of scan range" error. But this does NOT happen when I logged is as
root.

Somebody has a clue ... ?

Subject: linux kernel at end of large hard disk--dual boot question
Date: Sat, 18 Nov 2000 16:44:50 -0700

Hi,

I've installed linux and win NT,98 dual boot systems several times in
the past. I've never used a hard disk larger than 6 GB though.

I recently bought a 20 GB hard drive. I partioned the first 11 G for
win ME and installed it, and then I intended to install linux on the
last 9 GB.

Someone recently told me that my linux kernel must occur within the
first 8GB of disk space. If this is true, I've hosed myself it seems.

I'm going to install Red Hat 7, but I thought I check with the experts
about whether LILO and my computer's BIOS will mind if my linux kernel
is beyond 11GB on the drive.

Thanks for any advice--I thought I'd check before I screw everything up
if this is really the case.

Hi!

I have been given a copy of the above distro. Installation is fine but
it hangs up (freezes) when I try to configure SAX. The only recourse I
have is to reboot the computer via the reset switch.

When it reboots, I get fsck and e2fsck errors, and segmentation faults
as well.

What I would like to know is how to fix these errors without
re-installation (which I have done fot the 12th time).

Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

a) Log in as user, and then use
su
to log in as root.
You should NOT be using telnet anyway. It is very dangerous to use
telnet since the passwords can easily be sniffed.

b) Install ssh and use it instead. It is much more secure.

Subject: CD-RW failure - What do I try next?
From: Questioner <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 18 Nov 2000 17:23:22 -0800

I just bought one of those $99 CenDyne (www.cendyne.com) CD-RW drives
at CompUSA. deja.com tells me (from my ROM version) it's a remarked
ACER 8432i, but I'm not sure.

I can read audio and iso9660 CDROMs and writing of CDR and CDRW disks
give NO ERROR MESSAGES with either plain cdrecord or xcdroast audio or
data from hard disk or from companion CDROM drive. But after writing,
the disk appears to xcdroast to be empty or missing (depending on
the sub-application/form). Attempts to mount a disks give:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrw,
or too many mounted file systems

My FIFO stays at least 90% full throughout on my 500 MHz system.
I can read the metadata (ATIP info) off the disk OK.
My secondary IDE channel has a CDROM at primary/hdc (accessing as IDE)
with the CD-RW at slave/hdd (accessing as scd0) and as I said,
communications with both drives seem to be OK both directions.

I've tried two brands (good and bad) of CDRW media and the one CDR
that came with the system. I've tried the CDRW at 4x and 2x speeds.

I can see a change to the disk surface after writing but only about
1/4 inch seems to be written on a normal write while a blank=all
changes the whole (1.5? inch radially) disk.

I have no ready access to a different operating system.

I've tried doing "head -c 20480 /dev/scd0 | cd -c" and get an
"Input/output error" with my written disk (and stuff with recognizable
strings from a prerecorded data CD).

The 3-page CD-RW manual says to make it the master (and only) drive on
the channel, but I can't believe that's necessary. Anyone know
different or think of a reason why it might be a problem?

Have there been any kernel problems or differences? I don't see much
on that at deja.com. I'm using a 2.2.16 patched with IDE improvments
which has been working OK for several months.

Any idea what I should try next? Must I embarass myself by taking it
to someone with a different OS?

Thanks for responding to the newsgroup; the return address won't work.

Have you installed the X development package?

what you do is, if you can move or shrink the windows partition, then
you need to cut a tiny little partition (15-20 megs) within the 1024
cylinder boundary. and tell your distributio n installer to mount this
partition as /root.

however, it may not be necesary at all. the latest lilo can boot
beyond this limit. I have no expience with it, you need to read the
docs.

A) Crossposting to more than about 4 groups is considered rude, and crossposting
to more than 6 will get the post cancelled by most news servers.

B) The best answer to your question is "Don't." But if you really really gotta,
edit /etc/securetty. What you should do is disable telnet entirely and use SSH
or OpenSSH.

I'm a bit of a newbie to xWindows, and I was wondering if after I use the
.deb installs, do I need to manually place the shortcuts in the start menu?
or is this supposed to do so automagicly?

So you are connecting with minicom? There is a way of
leaving minicom without dropping the PPP connection; do that
(I forget what it is) then type, for example "lynx" to start
your browser.

Have you looked at the CD-Writing-HOWTO at;
http://linuxdocs.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/howtos.html
What is the output of;
cdrecord --scanbus
and exactly what command are you using for cdrecord?
I have a very similar setup and am not having problems.
