Subject: possible security issue??
Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 18:58:03 -0400

Hi,

I guess I should have stated this differently from my previous post. After
I installed qpopper and used it, the properties/output of ps -ef changed to
the following.

  PID TTY STAT  TIME COMMAND
 2979  ?  S    0:00 -bash HOME=/home/frank USER=frank LOGNAME=frank
PATH=/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/bin MAIL=/var/spool/mail/frank SH
 3000  ?  R    0:00  \_ ps -ef LESSOPEN=|/usr/bin/lesspipe.sh %s USERNAME=
HISTSIZE=1000 HOSTNAME=troy-net-svr1 LOGNAME=frank SSH_T

as apposed to the traditional.

   PID TT       S  TIME COMMAND
  4194 pts/0    S  0:00 /bin/tcsh
 29177 pts/0    S  5:49 elm/bin/elm
  3554 pts/3    S  0:00 -tcsh
 25251 pts/5    S  0:00 -tcsh
 21040 pts/6    S  0:00 login -p -h ladybird -f claret
 21041 pts/6    S  0:01 -tcsh

Does this mean I've been hacked or have a security issue from an install? I
don't understand how an installation can change the display properties of
the ps command.

Thanks
Frank

You answered your own question: See the 'help' menu for your CD burning
program. Hopefully it has the capability to burn an image onto CD. It is
possible that you might need to use a different filename extension for
burner to recognize it as an image file.

Did you download qpopper from http://www.eudora.com/ or somewhere else?
Qpopper 2.41 and older can be used to obtain root access to your system.
Qpopper 2.53 and older may permit an attacker who has access to a valid
account to obtain a shell with group-id 'mail', potentially allowing
read/write access to all mail.

It sounds like you may have been cracked, since one of the things they do
is change your ps so you cannot see their processes running. I don't know
if checking the file date for ps and your logs will reveal anything.

I just noticed a few weeks ago that there haven't been any updates
for RedHat 6.0 packages while there were plenty for RedHat 7.0 and 6.2
Does that mean that is is not supported any more? I wish redhat posted
a note on their site somewhere that 6.0 is not supported.

I still have a couple small departmental servers running it without
any problems. I was thinking of going all the way to 7.1 or 7.2 when it
is available.

My rules are "deny all" and "masq" and "allow web".
I'd like to allow NAPSTER traffic as well.....

Anyone ?

I pulled it together so it was readable. What is your routing now? If
the network route is not automatically set by whatever means you use to
bring up eth0 you might need:

route add -net 192.168.0.0 dev eth0

And for the default route:

route add default gw rcn.rcn.com dev eth0
(using the IP if rcn.rcn.com doesn't work)

But I do not know where you would put these in Debian to work
automatically. There may be scripts to configure this.

He should look in /etc/init.d/network[ing]. It may use data files
elsewhere (in /etc).

I get the same thing, going from redhat 7 2.2.17-14 to 2.4.3, except that
for me it's 03:03 instead of 08:02. My root partition is on /dev/hda1 and
lilo is set up identically for both the 2.2.17 and 2.4.3 images including a
root= line, but it still won't work.

I get the exact same problem, except I went from redhat 7 2.2.17-14 to
2.4.3, and I am trying to mount /dev/hda3 as root. I get "Unable to mount
root fs on 03:03". I've compiled in every single filesystem option I can
find in 2.4.3 and it still doesn't work.

Actually, in the Red Hat Store there is an Update CD available that is
claimed to update all Red Hat versions from 5.2 quite nicely. However, I
have found that the update fails with dependency failures on RH 6.0 but
update 6.1 and 6.2 very easily. A call to Red Hat was no help but they did
pass my report on to the technical people in hopes that that would be
corrected in future versions of the CD. The April CD may have this
corrected. I don't have one yet.

How far into the shutdown process does it get? If it is near the end, try
changing the last section of your /etc/rc0.d/S01halt file
so that it looks like this:

HALTARGS="-i -d"
if [ -f /halt ]; then
    HALTARGS="-i -d"
fi

eval $command $HALTARGS

this section specifically --> HALTARGS="-i -d"

might have a -p argument, which tells the computer to power off. Some
chipsets / mobo / or whatever have problems with it. I had this problem
with my AMD k6-2 450 on a gigabyte mobo (don't remember the model) and it
caused a segfault instead of turning of the power.

As for slowness, what are you running? All the default servers that get
set up at install? KDE with all the bells and whistles? On a 300 with 64,
kde is going to be a bit slow i think. Try a lighter window manager. Also
try turning off any services you don't need.

Did you run sndconfig? And it couldn't find your AWE 64?

Sorry, cannot help with the modem.

IMHO, there are a lot of problems using the 2940 with Suse 7.0.

Here is what I have to do to get my Suse 7.0 system to boot:

lilo: manual
<Tell it the language and display type>
When it asks if I want to boot, I tell it to load device modules. I select
SCSI adapter, then I select Adaptec 2940. Now comes the important part. It
asks if I have any parameters for the device, and I enter
            aic7xxx='seltime:0.extended.no_reset'

Next, it goes through a detection phase, finds my adapter and all of its
devices (two hard drives and a CDROM drive). Then, when it asks if I want to
begin installing Linux, I tell it to boot an existing installation. Then, it
asks where to boot, and I tell it /dev/sda4. Then, it boots and runs,
perfectly.

However, I have tried about forty ways to just start the machine and have it
boot my installation. Nothing ever works. It either fails to detect the host
adapter, or it detects it and then gets repeated timeouts. So, the above
procedures are a pain, but they work.

I was going to try it out, but I think I'll do a little more

Hi

I've purchase 7.1 and have installed it several places. Luckily, one of
those places has a printer smart enough to recognize the page size

Oh yes, this printer is remote, does that make a difference on the page
size setup?
