Symmetry is in the eye of the beholder. There are tons of symmetries other
than just a normal "mirror" symmetry which you seem to be thinking about,
and even a mirror symmetry actually allows for an odd number of point (the
odd one just has to be on the symmetry line).
So no, we can't make excuses. Other than maybe blaming hardware (lack of
termination or similar) or the BIOS (confusion in the MP tables). Either
of those could be the case, but it could easily be something in Linux too
that has never been tested.
