  This may sound stupid but the only time I got that problem (i.e. nothing
being printed past "Now booting the kernel") building a zImage instead of a
bzImage fixed the problem. it was on an IBM 600 laptop though, not an SMP
machine. Double check that you enabled VGA display on the console too ...
