I had exactly the same problem, but I fixed it by making a boot floppy
disk (make zdisk). If I boot off the floppy, all is well.
I have seen one mention of a problem using LILO with SMP kernels, but have
not been able to find a fix.
If there is one, I'd be keen to hear it. It seems a shame to have to boot
a 4-way Xeon machine off a 3.5" floppy disk! [Machine is Intel SC450NX.]
