because Intel's SMP support is proprietary, and as far as I know, AMD
doesn't have license to use it.  if they did, the K6 would have an io-apic
in it, and we all would have the pleasure of running dual K6-2 boxes.

sure, sure.  that has nothing to do with SMP support, though.  note that I 
fully expect AMD's SMP support to be nice and relatively clean, and to be
added to Linux soon after it's available.

no.  DEC has said that they have no plans to do this, which is unsurprising,
since DEC traditionally puts lots of firmware onto the motherboard.
