I have had several contacts with AMD about the HALT/LOCKUP bug in the K6
chips, and attached is the latest information that I have from AMD.
(BTW, I have found the AMD folks to be very responsive, although I wish
there was a solution to the known chip bug.)

I will continue to chellenge AMD to find a means to test the "errata"
chips for the HALT bug, but so far I have received consistant
information from multiple AMD sources (per the attached).

AMD is very interexted in supporting Linux and I have offered to work
with them to test the K-7 on 2.0.x and 2.1.x SMP (They are already
testing Linux on UP K-7). I expect that testing to begin in 1Q99.

Cheers,
Lyle

In essence all model 6 and model 7 processors are affected by this erratum.
Only a subset of the model 8 processors are affected (AMD-K6-2). However,
there is no way, through software or visual inspection, to determine if
you have a stepping of the model 8 that resolves the erratum. All
shipments of the model 9 (AMD-K6-3), which will be launched next year,
will not be affected.
