I seem to also have this problem - just reproduced it 2.1.131
also. It get it when I manipulate large images in GIMP - which is single
threaded so my load is only reaching 4ish. After it starts happening the
system gets slower and slower until I stop and restart the rc5 clients. It

Ah..since the rc5 clients are in common in both posts, why aren't you
considering them as the cause? Seems far more likely than a kernel
issue.
