APM or APC as in UPS?

The newer APC products have the ablity to disable the chatty nature of the
beasts and revert to simple signal mode in a moment. By using on the PnP
dual use cables will allow one (in theory) to stop "smart signals" adjust
the baud rate and go it to "simple signal" mode. This is because their
toys are auto baud-sensing. Set the baud rate to anything other than
2400,8,N,1 and you revert. Now, if APM will handle detection of line
state changes in TTL fashion, one can easily (in theory) but both devices
into suspend mode. Upon a line failure the UPS will raise the DCD line.
You wake up from APM and then your daemon (apcupsd) could (not implemented
yet) re-enable "smart signal" support again.

Problems.....there is now way for my daemon to interface with the kernel
in that mode, currently. However with the latest design using shmarea, a
tool that would detect APM events could be design to set/clear flags in
the daemon.
