While I am philosphically opposed to what you are trying to do (for a range of
reasons, mainly that I think that, in general, the user experience will be
worse), I think that this is still a useful tool to have in user space. You
can see my previous work (based on BSD work) on this at

It has firmware that you might like to include in a tar file, subject to
getting Matto Hatori's (sp?) approval. I did a fair bit of work on the i2c
code for a previous project.
