There are USB host-to-host cables which, with the "usbnet"
driver, let you transfer data using the network stack at more
or less standard Ethernet speeds (10 Mbit/sec).

I've had better luck with the more expensive Belkin products
than the cheaper Prolific based ones, but as they say "your
mileage may vary".  (The "usbnet" driver does recover when
the Prolific devices lock up under load, but the cost is that
throughput goes way down.)  If what I heard about a LapLink
USB cable was correct, that'd be worth using too.
